Ten Westfield Area YMCA Flyers Track Club athletes joined nearly 1,000 athletes at the USATF Region 2 Junior Olympic Track & Field Championship Meet from July 11-14 at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. The Flyers athletes produced: two region championship titles, two team records, nine qualifiers for the National Junior Olympics to be held in Sacramento, CA, and several personal records.
The two region champions were: Brian Guterl in the 1500m race walk for boys ages 9-10, and Diya Jain in the 1500m race walk for girls ages 9-10.
Flyers Track Club records were set by: Colin Brennan in the 450g aero javelin for boys ages 11-12, and Isabella Alvarez-Gomez, De'Janna Mathis, Alexis Ray, and Grace Gloster in the 4x100m relay for girls ages 11-12.
National qualifiers in the ages 9-10 category were: Annabelle Giudice in the girls long jump, Brian Guterl in the boys 1500m race walk, Diya Jain in the girls 1500m girls race walk and in the girls 300g mini javelin, and Sydney Kessler in the girls long jump.
National qualifiers in the ages 11-12 category were: Colin Brennan in the boys 450g aero javelin and Isabella Alvarez-Gomez, De'Janna Mathis, Alexis Ray, and Grace Gloster in the girls 4x100m relay.
Flyers athletes who traveled to Sacramento, CA, July 22-28, to compete in the girls ages 9-10 division at USATF National Junior Olympic Championships were: Annabelle Giudice in the long jump, Diya Jain in the 1500m race walk and in the 300g mini javelin, and Sydney Kessler in the long jump. Diya Jain won the 1500m race walk for girls ages 9-10, bringing home the titles of National Champion and All-American athlete! Diya also competed in the AAU Junior Olympic Games for Track & Field in Greensboro, NC. She placed 2nd in the 1500m race walk for 10-year-old girls and broke the Flyers Track Club record for the second time this year.
The Westfield Area YMCA Flyers Track Club is a USATF-certified club led by USATF-certified coaches and serves hundreds of athletes ages 7-15 all year-round.
